OUR STORY

"Providing Homes for 40 Years"

McMaster House welcomed it's first residents to the scheme in June 1984, which means our small scheme has been making people feel at home for four decades.

St Luke's Housing Society and the neighbouring St Luke's Hospital were the inspiration of the late Mary McMaster (formerly known as Mary Neville) and both are steeped in history.  The full story of this remarkable initiative can be found in Mary McMaster’s book, The Vision, the Quest and the Goal.

Mary was born on 15th March 1914 at Chatham. At the end of the Great War Mary and her family moved to Oxford where she continued her education. Mary trained as a physiotherapist at the Middlesex Hospital where she discovered her passion and vocation. Mary went on to work at the Stoke Mandeville and Wingfield Morris Hospital, now known as the Nuffield Orthopaedic.

Mary's vision was to build a community and build facilities to accommodate and and nurse residents with health and mobility needs.  This grew into St Luke's Hospital which opened in 1982, and some two years later, McMaster House, was established.
